Assam Government trying to cut off Bengali holidays leading to demonstrations

People of Silchar are now echoing strong sentiments against the Assam government’s decision on to curtail the number of Durga Puja holidays for Barak Valley from the academic calendar and also cancellation of many other regional festivals like Manasa Puja, Chatt Puja, Shivratri and etc. The government even decided to cancel the holiday on the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.

On this note, the people of Barak Valley decided to register their collective protest outside the office of Inspector of schools  Cachar on June 28. This was decided at a citizens’ meet convened by the All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students’ Association(ACKHSA) at the Madhya Sahar Sanskritik Samiti Hall.

Members of various organisations and associations, including the leading citizens of the valley unanimously agreed to support a 12-hour bandh on June 29th to vent their anger on this decision of the government to lessen the holidays of Durga Pujo to only 4days.

For a Bengali person, Durga Pujo is like an annual fest, until this very year, the holidays were given for almost 1month, suddenly, the government now decides to lessen it. The government also decided to scrap holidays on Sabbebarat and also on Tagore’s birthday, which is not at al acceptable.

Also, the government now decides to curtail the holiday on 19th may which holds a special place in every Silcharians life as on this day in 1961, 11 people gave up their life for the sake of the mother language.
