Indrani Mukherjee, ( former media entrepreneur, who has been in jail since 2015 on charges of murdering her daughter, Sheena Bora ) revealed the harsh of the jails of India.
According to sources, Mrs. Mukherjee told a court in Mumbai that she and the other women present in the jail watched jail officials dragging a woman using her saree she had draped around her neck and assaulted her. The victim, Manjula Sheyta, died a few hours later, allegedly after being brutally beaten by a wooden stick. The FIR or the police complaint filed by the cell-mates of the victim reveals that a lathi or wooden rod was inserted into the private parts of Ms. Sheyta. Mrs. Mukherjee said the authority had even threatened her with the “same consequence” if she spoke out against them.
On Saturday morning, along with other 200 women, she climbed onto the roof of the prison in the heart of the financial capital to protest against the death of Ms. Sheyta, who had been convicted of killing a family member. Six prison officers had been suspended for Ms. Sheyta’s death. The reason behind this killing seems to be the complaint made by her against the inadequate food supplies served to the prisoners.
Mrs. Mukherjee revealed at the court that she along with some other inmates was beaten with metal batons by the male officers, and before assaulting the female prisoners, the officers out off the lights. After which Mrs. Mukherjee was taken to the hospital to ascertain injuries.
